Canada has ranked ahead of the United States in university research performance in the latest 2026 MeasuresHE Country 100 Report, showcasing the country’s growing leadership in global higher education and innovation.

The report ranked Canada third globally for research excellence, while the United States secured fourth place. The findings are expected to further strengthen Canada’s position as one of the world’s leading destinations for international students, researchers, and skilled professionals.

Canada Among World’s Top Research Leaders

According to the report, the top five countries for university research performance are:

  • United Kingdom – 95.2
  • Netherlands – 91.7
  • Canada – 89.4
  • United States – 89.0
  • Sweden – 88.3

The research rankings were based on the quality and influence of academic publications produced between 2020 and 2024. Analysts considered multiple factors, including citation impact and contributions to breakthrough academic discoveries.

Canada Excels in Academic Integrity and Global Integration

The report also revealed that Canada outperformed the United States in additional categories related to higher education quality and international collaboration.

Canada received:

  • 100 points for academic integrity
  • 84.0 points for international integration

Meanwhile, the United States scored:

  • 99.6 for academic integrity
  • 60.4 for international integration

The MeasuresHE report evaluated countries using 25 indicators divided across seven major categories:

Research was given the highest importance with a weighting of 35%, reflecting its role in measuring research leadership, global academic influence, and innovation capacity.
