Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, otherwise known as IRCC, has just released a new set of Invitations to Apply through the latest Express Entry draw. As was the case with most of this year’s draws, the recent draw targeted PNP candidates, where a total of 911 ITAs were issued. Applicants who received an invitation needed to have a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System, or CRS, score of 732.
This draw is the first of the month, after a particularly busy summer. IRCC issued 14 Express Entry draws throughout July and August. July was especially remarkable, as it set a new record for the most draws issued in any single month since the introduction of the system in 2015, with nine draws taking place in a window from July 2 to July 31.
The last Express Entry draw took place on August 27, in which 3,330 ITAs were issued to candidates within the Canadian Experience Class program. IRCC has recently been in a pattern of issuing at least two draws every two weeks, with one normally for PNP candidates. This tactic aligns with IRCC’s method to provide more ways for temporary residents in Canada to become permanent residents without raising the number of new temporary residents entering Canada.

Express Entry is an application management system that IRCC introduced in 2015. It helps select candidates for economic immigration by assessing their qualifications. It manages three major immigration programs: the Federal Skilled Worker Program, the Canadian Experience Class, and the Federal Skilled Trades Program.
At the center of Express Entry is the Comprehensive Ranking System. The CRS awards points in areas like language proficiency, work experience, education, occupation, and age. These points create an overall score of the candidate. Candidates with higher scores are more likely to receive an ITA.
Candidates can also apply to streams in a Provincial Nominee Program, that coincide with Express Entry. Such nominations are commonly referred to as enhanced nominations. Candidates who receive a PNP nomination automatically obtain 600 additional CRS points and a much-higher likelihood of an ITA in one of the future draws.
In 2023, IRCC introduced category-based selection draws that target candidates with specific in-demand skills, particularly related to work experience. Candidates must continue to be part of the Express Entry pool but do not need to be part of a particular program. The CRS threshold in these draws is usually lower compared to both program-specific or general draws.
Below are the current categories for targeted selection:
IRCC revisits these categories every year and modifies them, if necessary, to reflect labour market requirements and demographics that are changing.
