Canada has been named among the world’s best countries in the newly released 2026 global rankings published by U.S. News & World Report. The country secured the 19th position overall in a major international assessment that analyzed 100 nations using data-driven indicators.
Although Canada ranked lower than previous years, experts say the drop is mainly due to a completely revised ranking methodology introduced for 2026.
The report highlighted Canada’s strongest performance in the Culture & Tourism category, where it ranked 8th globally. Canada also earned strong positions in Governance, Infrastructure and Opportunity categories.
Switzerland emerged as the world’s best country in 2026, followed by Denmark and Sweden. The United States ranked 18th, placing just ahead of Canada.
The top 10 countries included several European nations, reflecting Europe’s continued dominance in global quality-of-life and development indicators.
The report specifically praised Canada’s multicultural identity and immigration-friendly society. According to the rankings, Canada’s diversity, tourism appeal, museums, heritage sites and cultural influence played a major role in its top-10 placement for Culture & Tourism.
Canada’s long-standing multicultural policies continue to support its reputation as one of the most welcoming countries for immigrants and international students.
Canada’s overall performance included:
The report noted that Canada’s weakest area was environmental sustainability and protection of natural resources.
Unlike earlier editions, the 2026 rankings were based on statistical data instead of public opinion surveys.
Previous reports relied on global perceptions from thousands of respondents worldwide. The updated rankings instead analyzed hard data from international organizations such as the United Nations, OECD, World Bank and International Labour Organization.
Because of this methodological shift, Canada’s ranking decline from 2nd place in 2023 to 19th place in 2026 does not necessarily indicate a decline in the country’s actual performance.
Despite the ranking changes, Canada continues to attract immigrants due to its stable economy, strong governance, high-quality infrastructure and employment opportunities.
The country remains one of the most preferred destinations for skilled professionals, international students and families seeking long-term settlement opportunities abroad.
